Thanks to Anderson's Bookstore for sharing John Bemelmans Marciano with us. Brookdale's kindergarten, first and second grade classes really enjoyed Mr. Marciano's presentation. Four of our 2nd grade students were selected to introduce Mr. Marciano. They did a fantastic job.

Title: “On the Run 5, Public Enemies” Author: Gordon Korman

“On the Run 5, Public Enemies” is about Aiden, a 15 year old boy and Meg, a 12 year old girl. In the story Aiden and Meg are trying to prove their parents are innocent because they were framed for funneling money to terrorists. Adien and Meg have to run from the cops, hide from hairless Joe a mass murderer and prove their parents innocence in this book.
I recommend “On the Run 5, Public Enemies” to anyone who likes drama with crime. This nonstop thriller will give you a laugh or two along its story line. This is Gordon Korman at his finest. Korman has been known for his great action novels, and this book just continues that trend. I highly recommend this book to kids who like their stories full of action and suspense. If you liked “Fire in the Hole”, then you’ll love this book. You could really enjoy this book on its own, or read the first 4 books before you start this action-packed novel.

The Invention of
Hugo Cabret

By: Brian Selznick

The Invention of Hugo Cabret is an amazing book. It is one of the best books I have ever read. It is a mixture of pictures and words that come together to form a great story. The story is about Hugo Cabret. Hugo lives in the walls of a train station, alone. His dad died in a terrible fire and his uncle died mysteriously. When Hugo went to the ruins of the museum where his father died, he found a mechanical man called an automata and he took it home. His uncle’s job was to work the clocks at the train station. When his uncle disappeared, Hugo took over. Though Hugo gets his uncle’s paychecks, he does not know how to cash them so he has to steal to get his food and drink. He also steals from a toy store in the station. One day Hugo got caught by the toy store owner, while he was there, a girl came along. After that everything starts to unravel. If you want to find out about the girl, the toy store owner, Hugo and what the automata has to do with the book, read it! If you like the Peter and the Starcatchers trilogy, you will like this book because in both stories one of the main characters learns a lot about themselves and their past by doing things with the other characters in the books.

"Money Hungry"

by Sharon G. Flake

I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to all my friends. The story is about a thirteen year old girl named Raspberry and her obsession with money. Raspberry was a poor girl living with her mother in the projects and before that they were both homeless. This book shows how she worked and did chores and sold her things just to get more money believing that it would make her happy and get rid of all her problems. One day their apartment got robbed and all her money was stolen. Raspberry still had friends and mother and Dr.Mitchell that took care of them in their new home.
In this book you will learn that having friends and family that cares about is more important than having all the money in the world which could be lost at any moment.
If you read and liked "Sahara Special " you will like this book because both books are about young girls that had to deal with complicated issues and both ended happily.

The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo

If you enjoy fantasy or adventure books, like the first Harry Potter book and the extraordinary adventures of Alfred Kropp, then you’ll love this book. The main character is Despereaux, the mouse. He’s different from other mice and while trying to fit in, he breaks a lot of rules. This book has a lot of action in it. I liked this book because I could never tell what was coming next. This book had a lot of twists to it but in the end it all pulled together. So, you want a great adventure, read this book.

The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Perilous Journey by Trenton Lee Stewart is about the second journey of the “Mysterious Benedict Society”. The people in this group are there is Kate Wetherall, Reynie Muldoon, George “Sticky” Washington, and Constance Contraire. Their friendship began in the first book The Mysterious Benedict Society when they went to defeat Mr. Curtain who is sending strange messages through T.V. and the radio. Kids are the ones reciting these messages. I recommend these books to anyone who is looking for a fun adventure. If you liked the Harry Potter series you’ll love The Mysterious Benedict Society and The Mysterious Benedict Society and the Perilous Journey because they are all full of adventure. Also if you liked The Underland Chronicles you will love these books because they’re all full of adventure.

The Penderwicks
By: Megan W.

If you like to read books were you don't know what’s going to happen The Penderwicks is a good for you. The Penderwicks is all about 4 sisters, 2 rabbits, a very weird boy and a dog named Hound. Batty the youngest, Penderwick never takes off her butterfly wings. Sky the 2nd youngest loves to play soccer and run into things. Jane the 2nd oldest likes to write books. Roseland the oldest likes to cook and watch Batty. Their summer home got rented at the last minute so the girls had no plans for the summer. But luckily their dad found them a place to stay in Anderhall. Anderhall is the home to the biggest garden in the state and they get to stay in a little house in the center of the gardens. This is a story about the 4 girls and their adventures. The story makes you laugh when the girls deal with the rabbits and giggle watching Roseland fall in love with a tall teenage boy named Carged. If you liked the Spiderwick Chonicles you would love The Penderwicks because they all go some were new. If you like Madison Finn you would like The Penderwicks because Roseland and Madison both have to make really hard choices.

Pee-Wee’s Tale by Johanna Hurwitz is about a guinea pig named Pee-Wee and a boy named Robbie. Uncle Arthur bought Pee-Wee from the pet store and gave him to Robbie for his birthday, but Robbie’s mom didn’t know and didn’t like rodents. One day Robbie’s mom and dad put Pee-Wee in a box and set him free in the park. Pee-Wee met a squirrel named Lexi, and they became friends. Pee Wee knew how to read and read magazines to the other animals. One day he found Robbie, but he decided to stay in the park because Robbie was happy with his new pet dog.
If you like Stuart Little, you will like Pee-Wee’s Tale because they are both about cute little animals that are set free and need to learn how to survive. Also if you like Charlotte’s Web, you’ll like Pee-Wee’s Tale because both books have characters that know how to read and save the day.

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR
BY: JOHN R. TUNIS

I read the book Rookie of the Year by John R. Tunis. I recommend this book because it is a really good sports book.

The story is about a rookie baseball player named Bones Hathaway. He plays for the Los Angeles Dodgers and becomes the best player on the team. He has some problems during the season that makes him leave for a while, but he eventually comes back and helps his team win the pennant.

This is a great book for people who love baseball. If you have ever pitched in a baseball game you will be able to relate to this character. I liked this book because I am a rookie on my major league baseball team this year.

If you liked the Matt Christopher series you would love this book. Also, if you liked the book Heat, you would enjoy this book.

I hope you take the time to read this book over the summer.

Little Town on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder

If you want to know what it was like in colonial times, this is a great book for you. It follows the story of Laura’s life after the hard winter. You like this book? Then you’ll love the sequel, These Happy Golden Years. More for girls than boys. If you liked that, go back two books before and read The Long Winter. For boys too, but still more for girls. I hope you read this book!

AMONG THE BETRAYED

By: Margaret Peterson Haddix
Among the Betrayed is a great book! I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to go on a fun adventure or just read a good, suspenseful book. If you have ever read Among the Hidden or Among the Impostors and you liked them, don’t stop there, because you’ll love the third book, Among the Betrayed. Make sure you read the other two books first. Once you start reading Among the Betrayed you’ll never want to put it down. This book will keep you away from the population police.

Fablehaven 1 by: Brandon Mull

Do you like mystical creatures and items, books that keep you on the edge of your seat, or books that are scary, happy and sad? If you do, you will definitely like Fablehaven. The book, Fablehaven, is about a brother and sister who go to visit their grandfather and grandma while their parents are on vacation. Fablehaven is a hidden place all around the grandparents’ house that is full of magical creatures, like ferries and witches. After a few days at their grandparents’ house, they figure out some of the secrets of Fablehaven. As days go by, the kids figure out more and more things about Fablehaven, some good, some bad, some scary. While reading this book, you will find out all of the rest of the secrets. Fablehaven is a book series, so if you like the first book, don’t worry, there is more! If you liked Harry Potter, then you will like this book. If you also liked The Candy Shop War, then you will like this book.

Title: The Wind in the Willows
Author: Kenneth Grahame

RECOMMENDATION

I recommend this book to people who like stories with characters that are animals because the main characters are Mole, Rat, Badger, and Toad. I also recommend this book to people who like small adventures because there is a chapter in the book called Toads Adventures. There was also a part were Toad goes jail for stealing a car he likes and for driving it really fast down the road. Not only that but there are a lot of other chapters that have exciting adventures in them. The Wind in the Willows is a nice book to read any time!

If you liked the Wizard of Oz then you will like the Wind in the Willows because in the Wizard of Oz there is a girl named Dorothy, and she goes on a journey with some animals to go and see the Wizard and in the Wind in the Willows there is no girl but in one part Mole, Rat, and Badger go on a small journey to see Toad.

HANK ZIPZER Get Me Out Of Fourth Grade
by Henry Winkler and Lin Oliver
Hank is in fourth grade. It’s the end of the school year and parent-teacher conferences are coming up. Hank looks in Mrs. Adolf’s roll book and sees that he has all Ds and the word “redo” next to his name. He’s worried because he thinks he is going to repeat fourth grade! Hank tries to get his parents out of town so they can’t go to the parent-teacher conference.
Will he be able to do it? Will he repeat fourth grade? No matter how much we like Mr. Schumann, we would not want to repeat fourth grade, now would we? This book was fun to read and some parts were very funny! I would definitely recommend this book.
If you like this book, you will also like Hank Zipzer - The Zippity Zinger and Hank Zipzer – I Got a “D” in Salami.

The title of the book I read is Saving Shiloh. The author is Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. I would recommend you read this book because it was a great mystery. Most of the time when I was reading it, I did not want to put it down. There were heartbreaking parts in the book, but the ending made it all worthwhile. If you like great mysteries and dogs you will definitely enjoy this book. Saving Shiloh is the third book in the Shiloh trilogy. So if you have read the first two books, Shiloh and Shiloh Season, make sure you read this book too.

If you liked the book Red Dog by Bill Wallace, then you’ll love this book. If you liked the book Top Dog by Jenny Dale, then you’ll love this book. Both of these books are similar to Saving Shiloh because they have a dog as one of the main characters, and they are both mysteries too.

From The Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler by E.L. Konegsburg is a story about a shy girl named Claudia and her cheapskate-of-a-brother, Jamie, running away to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. After a few days in the museum, they find a beautiful statue called "angel". The museum put it up for auction and sold it for the highest bid, $225,000 . They were looking for at the place "angel" once stood before the people took it out and saw that A. someone moving it was drinking beer and B. since there was someone drinking beer, they set their glass down and someone put the statue there and the "M" on the bottom of the statue made an indentation. To see if it really was Michelangelo (the greatest sculptor in the western world) that sculpted "angel", they went to the owner of the statue, Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, in Farmington, Connecticut. It turns out, they were right. It was made by Michelangelo. Plus, they get the sketch of an angel that Mrs. Frankweiler had when she dies. And they make it home okay. (At least I think so because they don't tell you).

I recommend this book to any E.L. Konigsburg fan and to people who likes books with a lot of action. And people running away. And people who are rebels. And other things like people taking baths in fountains (very weird).

If you liked The View from Saturday and the Outcasts of 19 Schuyler Place or any other book by E.L. Konigsburg like Journey to an 800 Number, Jennifer, Hecate, Macbeth, William McKinley and Me, Elizabeth, then you'll love From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. The End.

Purple Climbing Days authored by Patricia Reilly Giff was a cool book. It is a story about a boy named Richard who is afraid of climbing. I liked this book because it has a Skink in the story. The skink loses his tail which rather freaked me out. I liked the boy's name Richard because that's my grandfather's name. I liked how Richard learned that everyone is afraid of something. I learned that even though you get scared, you don't have to stay that way. I also liked the grumpy old substitute teacher Mrs. Miller.

There are other books that I think you would like to read as well as this one. The Mouse and the Motorcycle is a good book as well as Tink, North of Neverland.

SWINDLE
By: GORDON KORMAN

If you like baseball, baseball cards, or secret missions this is a book you will not be able to put down. The story begins with two characters named Ben and Griffin who are best friends. They put their minds together and plan for everybody to attend a secret mission of going to the old Rockford house in New York. But Griffin and his best friend only show up until Griffin finds a baseball card in a drawer worth $1,000,000 dollars. They go to a store to see how much it is worth and the store owner, Mr. Palomino, tricks the boys into a cheap price of $120.00. Read the book to find out what Griffin comes up with next to get the card back.

I could compare this book to The Series of Unfortunate Events: The Bad Beginning. In the Bad Beginning a tricky figure like Mr. Palomino tries to get a large portion of money off of kids. In both books, the kids team up brain power and use it to keep and or get back what they deserve.

I could also compare this book to the book Hatchet. I could compare to Hatchet because in Hatchet, the boy learns to use what he has like the kids in this story did with the smart pick that they had to use to get the baseball card out of the tree.

This was a fantastic book and I really had fun reading it and hope you like it. So, if you enjoy action, thrill, excitement, and collecting baseball cards, this is the book for you.

Touching Spirit Bear
Book by:Ben Mikaelsen

I recommend Touching Spirit Bear if you like books about a kid that has many adventures. A couple of examples are that the kid, Ben, was sent to a remote island as punishment for committing a serious crime against another kind, Peter, and Ben was all alone on the island. You may also like this book if you like survival books. While trying to survive after being mauled by the spirit bear, Ben was rescued by the people that sent him to the island. If you liked the series, Hatchet, Brian's Winter, and Brian's Return, then you'll probably like this book. Mr. Schumann was the one who recommended this book to me.

SHILOH

My book blog report is on the book Shiloh. It is about a boy names Marty who finds a dog and finds who the owner is. He figures out he is not a nice owner. The dog gets abused. So Marty wants to rescue him. When he does get him he does not have the money to feed him. Because the family is giving money to the grandma they don't have money for a dog. So he starts saving cans and getting money for that. And only eats half of his lunch so Shiloh can have some. He tries to keep Shiloh safe. To find out more, read the book. If you like this book you'd probably like So B0. It because in both books people try to do something nice. I recommend this book to anybody that likes little sad books and for people who like dogs.
